So you just signed your closing documents, but when will you get the keys to your new house?
So this question comes up all the time, and the answer depends on several factors. But, before we jump in, let’s be clear on one point. Ownership of a property is not officially transferred from the seller to the buyer until the Deed is recorded with the register of deeds within the county that the property is being purchased in. A lot of people make the assumption that once they’ve signed the closing paperwork that the house is now theirs, and that is not true. It has to be recorded first, and that process could take a couple of hours to complete after all parties have signed.
